The early 20th century saw the rise of literature for children and the beginning of formal recognition of excellence and parallel developments for Jewish children, including creation of the Newbery and Caldecott Medals, and Jewish Book Week.  The publication of Sydney Taylor’s All-of-a-Kind Family was groundbreaking.  The class will also discuss recent trends in publishing for Jewish youth, including sources and suggested reading for participants to explore after the session.

Judy Ehrenstein is a children’s librarian in Montgomery County, MD and served on the Association of Jewish Libraries’ Sydney Taylor Book Award Committee, 2020-2022.  She currently is co-editor of children’s and teen book reviews for the AJL’s News and Reviews quarterly member publication and also writes reviews for the Jewish Book Garden blog (https://jewishbookgarden.substack.com/).  She lives in Silver Spring with her husband and has launched two book loving children.
