(26F4) Restoring Fallen Heroes: Reclaiming the Jewish Identities of American Servicemembers

November 8th, 2026, 1:00 pm - 2:15 pm

In this Veterans Day weekend class, Kenneth Greenberg of Jewish War Veterans (JWV) and Shalom Lamm, of Operation Benjamin, will discuss their shared commitment to honoring Jewish men and women who gave their lives in service to the United States. They will discuss the Fallen Servicemembers Religious Heritage Restoration Act pending legislation in Congress.  They will as well address Operation Benjamin’s work to first identify Jewish American servicemembers buried beneath Latin crosses in overseas military cemeteries, and then, when the evidence supports it and the appropriate authorities approve, to replace those markers with Stars of David.

With a Restoring Fallen Heroes Grant from the American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC), Greenberg and Lamm, in collaboration with the ABMC, will explore how to use historical research, military records, and family histories, to restore service members’ identities and to honor their memory. They will also reflect on what it means to ensure each fallen hero is remembered in keeping with the person’s faith and life.
