This class will introduce participants to the rich and diverse holdings of the Hebraic Section at the Library of Congress, one of the world’s major collections of Hebraica and Judaica. The class will briefly explore the history of the Library of Congress and the development of its Hebraic collections, including the people, acquisitions, and gifts that helped shape the collection over more than a century. Through selected treasures, participants will encounter Hebrew manuscripts, early and rare printed books, rabbinic literature, Yiddish materials, Jewish newspapers and periodicals, and works documenting Jewish history and culture from communities around the world.
Yoram Bitton is Chief of the African and Middle Eastern Division at the Library of Congress. He previously served as Head of the Library’s Hebraic Section, where he worked with its extensive collections of Hebrew manuscripts, rare books, Judaica, and Yiddish materials. Before joining the Library of Congress, he served as Director of the Libraries of Hebrew Union College–Jewish Institute of Religion in Cincinnati, OH. He has many years of experience working with Jewish libraries, rare books, manuscripts, and cultural heritage collections.
