The Center for Small Town Jewish Life at Colby College grew out of a belief that small Jewish communities are stronger when they work together. Started as a partnership between Colby College Hillel and Beth Israel Congregation in Waterville, Maine, the Center has grown to serve the entire Maine Jewish community with a Fall Shabbaton and Spring Conference as well as children’s programing and training for lay leaders. The Center works with remote communities around the United States to empower their leaders to create vibrant, diverse, and socially equitable communities. Rabbi Asch will share stories of the Center and how we work with small communities across the country.
Rabbi Erica Asch is the spiritual leader of Temple Beth El in Augusta, Maine. She received her rabbinic ordination from Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in 2008 and then took a position as a community organizer with the Industrial Areas Foundation. After three years with IAF, she served at Temple Sinai in Washington, D.C., before moving to Augusta in June 2013 to serve as the rabbi of Temple Beth El. She was installed as president of the Central Conference of American Rabbis in February 2023 in Tel Aviv. She is the Senior Program Associate at the Center for Small Town Jewish Life.
