Dear Study Center students and friends,
Welcome back! The Jewish year always seems to start off with a bang, and we're right there with it, launching a semester of brand-new classes and old favorites, with the help, as always, of our talented and generous volunteer teacher corps. Classes will be at Adas Israel on Wednesday nights (2850 Quebec St. NW) and at our Dupont Circle location, the National Museum of American Jewish Military History, on Tuesday nights (1811 R St NW)--with a few special events and locations mixed in.
This year, with some breathing room before the High Holidays, we've been able to bring back one of our favorite programs: our Pre- High Holidays Mini-Mester. On Wednesday, September 21, at Adas Israel, we'll offer four different one-session classes that will put you in the mood for the New Year and set your thoughts on the path to atonement and renewal. You can learn about the new Conservative Movement prayerbook with Rabbi Charles Feinberg, bake a round challah with Susan Finston, tease Kabbalistic themes out of the High Holiday liturgy with Jay McCrensky, or read modern poetry of atonement with Amy Schwartz. (For the complete listing, see below.)
Fall Semester starts Oct. 25
We're excited too about our lineup of regular classes, beginning Oct. 25 and thereafter: a new four-session series on Jewish Communities of the South--featuring the little-known stories of Jews from Alabama to West Virginia and beyond--as well as a new eight-session series on Global Jewish Cultures--Jews in India, Egypt, Spain, and even on the prairies of Northwest Canada, where there was once (would you believe) a thriving Yiddish literary culture. Other great classes include a return of our popular Sacred Fragrances class, a lesson in making kosher sushi, and a three-session look at Israel and the Arab Spring--past, present and future--featuring Middle East experts Paul Scham and Naiem Sherbiny. And there's more, much more!
Our course catalogue will be mailed the week of September 26--look for it around town too--and our full class schedule will be on our website soon at www.jewishstudycenter.org. Check there for updates. Other ways to register: Send us an email at info@jewishstudycenter.org, or leave a message at (202) 332-1221.
Get ready for another year! Come learn with us!
Best wishes for a sweet and enlightening New Year,
Amy Schwartz
