Parallel Narratives Never Meet: A History of the Israeli-Arab Conflict
Tuesdays Oct. 27, Nov. 3, 10, 17, 24, Dec. 1, 8 7:15-8:30PM
Instructor: Ira Weiss
Location: Adas Israel, 2850 Quebec Street NW, Washington, DC
Full course: $100 for Adas & JSC members; $150 for non-members
Palestinians and Israelis each have a narrative that tells the history of their people and that depicts reality from the perspective of that history. To acknowledge the narrative of the "other", one needs to understand what shaped it, how it evolved, and how particular historical developments affected the attitudes and beliefs that sustain it. Each Tuesday evening the class will study a different historical era or event in the history of the conflict, discussing each event as it is described in the Israeli narrative and also as it is depicted in the Palestinian narrative. Lectures will be augmented by slides, discussion and occasionally by short films.
Ira Weiss, a neurophysiologist at Children's Hospital for 33 years, attended Orthodox yeshiva on the Lower East Side of New York City and has been involved in Arab-Jewish dialogue for 15 years. He was a co-founder of Projects Encounter, which brought Palestinian and Israeli high school students to Spain for summer human rights seminars and coexistence workshops.

Recent Poetry by Jewish and Israeli Women
Tuesdays November 17, 24, December 1, 8 7:15-8:30PM
Instructor: Amy Schwartz
Location: Adas Israel, 2850 Quebec Street NW, Washington, DC
Full course: $50 for Adas & JSC members; $75 for non-members
The voices of Jewish women poets, long a quiet subtext at best, these have grown in recent decades to a major stream of the Jewish experience---in essays, in criticism, and in poetry both secular and sacred. In this course we will sample the rich poetic offerings of the last two decades, from female liturgists such as Marcia Falk and E. M. Broner to Marge Piercy, Alicia Ostriker and Dahlia Ravikovich. We will explore the contrasts (and connections) between Israeli and American artists, between 1970s feminists and their daughters, and between women of different political orientations. Suggestions by class members welcome.
Amy Schwartz, a Washington journalist, book reviewer and former op ed columnist, has taught many Study Center courses on poetry.
